Your resume is the first impression a recruiter makes of you and needs to show what you have to offer.
“The resume is the most important part of the application,” says Christina Schulte, adidas chief recruiting officer.
Insider spoke to hiring managers from major companies like BCG, Adidas, KPMG, and Salesforce about their hiring processes and what makes the app great.
Here are five tips for a perfect resume:
1. Glimpse into your career
At Siemens Technology Group, candidates simply submit their resume – a cover letter is not required.
“We want candidates to be able to reach us in the easiest way possible,” Alexandra Kleinlein, who is responsible for recruitment at Siemens, told Insider. She added that this makes the resume more important.
You should quickly summarize what you have achieved and what you want. “I need to get an instant picture of what the candidate did, what they’re looking at now, and how we fit in,” she said.
2. Describe previous roles with subtitles
According to Christina Schulte of Adidas, your resume should clearly state your work experience and why you are a good fit for the position.
You should list the previous roles and describe them in detail points.
Kleinlin told Insider that an “ideal” resume should tell recruiters about your specific jobs, the technologies you’ve worked on, the projects you’ve worked on, and how those projects went.
3. For appeal applications only, use a title if appropriate
If you find it difficult to use bullet points to describe your competencies, you can include a brief summary of yourself in the title of your resume, according to Catherine Federau, HR Specialist at Salesforce.
Salesforce is another company that does not require a cover letter from candidates. Fedrau said candidates with complex professional backgrounds should write something about their motivation for applying to the headline.
I told the insider that the title should include a brief summary of why you want to apply for the job and the company, and what you can offer the team.
4. Be clear and brief
“You should be clear and concise; make sure that everything on your resume adds value,” said Sana Saad and Trisha Gunawardene, recruiters at BCG’s Dubai office, according to the company’s website.
A good resume is divided into sections: education, internships, language skills, projects and other interests, says Caroline Easter, BCG partner and head of recruitment for Austria and Germany.
Maximilian Mendios, Head of Recruitment Systems, Methods and Tools at BMW, also emphasized clarity as an essential element of a resume. He told Insider that “any technical knowledge or experience should always be clearly listed on the first page of your resume.”
5. Give examples
According to Michael Falk, human resources and cybersecurity consulting partner at KPMG, anyone who lists a hobby on their resume should be as specific as possible.
It can make a small difference,” Falk told Insider.
He said there’s a big difference between someone writing in their autobiography that they enjoy running and asserting that they’re running a marathon. A more specific path provides a great talking point in the interview.
He added that your resume should include examples of things that the interviewer could pick up as topics for conversation.
“You can express your enthusiasm and motivation by sharing your participation in sports, school clubs, volunteering, training or anything other than just academics,” Saad and Gonawardini added on the BCG website.
