2022 – Abuse in the Modeling Industry – Podcast | newsletter

In the 80s, Marianne Shane worked as a model in Paris. One Saturday night, after having dinner with other models, her agent Jean-Luc Brunel raped her. For decades, she didn’t tell anyone what happened to her.

In 2020, Brunel was arrested on suspicion of trafficking and raping underage girls. He was a close associate of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and allegedly introduced him to more than 1,000 young women and teenagers. Like Epstein, Brunel committed suicide in prison, so he was never tried.

Since his death, six of Brunel’s accusers, including Marianne, have chosen to speak about their experiences. The Guardian’s Lucy Osborne tells Hannah Moore her stories and how the fashion industry allowed abuse.

Marianne can be seen in the documentary Sky Scouting for Girls: Fashion’s Darkest Secret, which will be released on June 24.
