“Alan White, our beloved husband and grandfather, passed away on May 26, 2022 at the age of 72 at his Seattle-area home after a short illness,” the post read.
“Throughout his six-decade career, Alan has been many things to many people: a certified rock star to audiences around the world, a bandmate of a select group, and a gentleman and friend to everyone they met.”
White’s bandmates said they would dedicate their UK tour “Near the Edge” in June to the “beloved drummer”.
Messages of honor from celebrities and musicians from around the world poured into social media following the news of his death.
She added, “He was always kind, gentle and cheerful. He blessed us because he was a part of our family.”
His family said in a Facebook post that White started playing drums at the age of 12 and was playing publicly within a year.
Prior to joining Yes, he played with many other bands including Downbeats, The Gamblers, and Bell & Arc.
In 1969, White was invited by John Lennon to join the band Plastic Ono, which led to him appearing on several Lennon albums, including Imagine.
When White joined Yes in July 1972, he only had three days to learn songs before a major US tour began, his family said. He contributed to songs like “Lonelly Hearted”, “Long Distance Ranarround” and “Dwart”.
In his long music career, he has also worked with stars such as George Harrison, Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton.
White was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Yes.
