LONDON (Reuters) – The World Health Organization does not believe an outbreak of monkeypox will lead to a pandemic outside of Africa, an official said on Monday, adding that it was unclear whether infected people who were asymptomatic could transmit the disease.
More than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox, a usually mild illness that spreads through close contact and causes flu-like symptoms and a characteristic rash, were reported in May.
Most cases have occurred in Europe rather than in the countries of Central and West Africa where the virus is endemic. No deaths have been reported so far.
