Simo Liu admitted that growing his body hair for the new Barbie movie was “one of the most painful experiences of my life”.
Leo, who was recently named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022, is starring in the upcoming film directed by Greta Gerwig. Much of the film has been kept secret, except for the star-studded cast, including Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who play the roles of Barbie and Ken.
While Leo did not reveal any plot details in his interview with The Independent, he did say that he had to get rid of almost all of his body hair for the film, except for his head hair.
“Growing up was an education, to say the least,” the actor said. “It was one of the most painful experiences of my life. I have such a newfound admiration for the incredibly brave women who go through this every month.”
Liu also said he enjoys the internet noise surrounding the movie. Many fans are excited about the movie, although only one picture has been released so far.

“Honestly, the speech on the Internet gives me life,” Liu said. “With every announcement or piece of news, they’re like, ‘What is this?’ “And that’s ideal – the less you know about it, the better.”
Kyle Buchanan, pop culture reporter for The New York Times chirp Earlier this month, he heard a rumor that Leo and Nkoti Gatwa would play alternate versions of Kane in the movie. He also said Issa Rae and Harry Nef will play two different versions of Barbie.
Also earlier this month, Leo told GQ that he auditioned for Barbie after an agent convinced him it was one of the best scripts he’d ever read.
“He literally said it,” recalls Liu. “He said, ‘If I could bet my career on one scenario, it would be on a ‘Barbie’ scenario. I really think you should.”
Barbie, which will hit cinemas in July 2023, also stars in SNL comedy Kate McKinnon and three actors from the Netflix sex-education series – Gatwa, Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells.
