2022 – BMW i3 production ends – CleanTechnica

The BMW i3 is a truly unique electric car – or one of a kind, and the i3 is expected to be on the roads of Europe and the US for many years to come. However, production of the new i3 cars was discontinued.

I bought a used BMW i3 when I came back to the US after living in Europe for 11 years and my family and I thoroughly enjoyed it for 9 months before giving it to my mom. It’s still one of my favorite cars, and if my wife and I buy a second car, it’s very likely an i3. (We currently have a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range.) There are some i3 features that we absolutely loved, and their low price on the used car market is very attractive. My mum has been enjoying this i3 for the past 3 years and I’m sure we could write more about it – but we already have. Here’s a final review from me, and here’s one from my mom.

The story today is that this popular electric car is no longer in production. BMW produced 250,000 units of the i3 during the product’s 8-year lifespan, but the era is now over and BMW needs to focus on new electric cars. Electric vehicle market in 2022 is dramatic Unlike the electric car market of 2013 or 2014, BMW simply decided that the i3 didn’t have a place in that market anymore.

Here are some of BMW’s own words about the significant end of production:

Leipzig. An era is coming to an end at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig. Production of the BMW i3 series will now be phased out about eight and a half years after its market launch. The inspiration, the impetus for innovation, pioneering domestically driven zero-emissions driving pleasure: the list of attributes that have accompanied the BMW Group’s first mass-produced all-electric car since its debut in 2013 is long. BMW i3 (Rated energy consumption: 16.3-15.3 kWh/100 km according to WLTP, 13.1-14.0 kWh/100 km according to NEDC, CO2 – Emissions: 0 g/km) Started as an exotic component of the barely-developed electric vehicle market, it evolved into a classic car with unmistakable charisma over its production period and entered the company’s history as a leader in sustainable mobility.

“For the BMW Group plant in Leipzig, saying goodbye to the BMW i3 means entering a new chapter in electric mobility. In addition to the production of high-voltage battery units, which have been in operation since May 2021, more electric motor components will now be manufactured there in a seamless transition. The next generation MINI Countryman at the same site early next year – including an all-electric drive. The electric know-how that the workforce has gained over the past few years will be used and expanded further. At the same time, the BMW Group plant will be in Leipzig. The first location in the company’s global production network where BMW and MINI models are manufactured together. […]

“The BMW i3 impressively ends its production streak. Just a few days ago, the 250,000th example of the electric compact car was produced in Leipzig. This makes the BMW i3 the most successful electric car in the world in the luxury compact segment. Contrary to what you might expect from a model Off, its popularity has not waned over time.

“The BMW i3 has been sold in more than 74 countries around the world. In many markets, it has achieved a much higher market share in the electric vehicle segment than the BMW brand in the conventional powered segment. There are a few interesting points at the end there. For a start, José Pontes made the same kind of comments multiple times during the i3 sunset months – sales were surprisingly high, sometimes even record breakingWhen the model’s farewell party was scheduled. Perhaps it was the i3’s unique style and subtle appeal that inspired many buyers to snap up one when they found i3 production was about to end.

Second, the indication that the i3 has been sold in more than 74 countries around the world (does that mean 75?) is a reminder of how much BMW’s approach has changed over a number of years. While dozens of electric vehicles have been sold in certain markets where automakers have had to sell electric vehicles or face heavy penalties (such as California), the only EV models actually sold in markets around the world are the BMW i3 and Nissan LEAF. From South Africa to Poland to various other countries you can’t get a Fiat 500e, Ford Focus Electric or Volkswagen e-up (the list goes on and on), but you can buy a BMW i3 (or Nissan LEAF). I still find that a bit exciting. Maybe BMW saw their cool little electric car as a way to attract more interest, or maybe it saw it as an electric car with true mass market potential, or maybe it just wanted to plant the seed of BMW being a leader in electric cars. However, one or more of these reasons has led to BMW being more diverse in its sales of electric cars than almost everyone else. You can even find the i3 in some markets where Tesla is not represented!

BMW adds: “The enduring appeal of the BMW i3, which is manufactured exclusively in Leipzig for the entire world market, is due to its particularly individual character. The unique chassis consists of the drive unit as an aluminum chassis that carries the electric motor, the chassis, the high-voltage battery and the passenger cell made of steel.
