A public inquiry into Canada’s worst mass shooting has revealed fatal police errors.

In April 2020, amid COVID-19 lockdowns, 22 people were killed in Portapique, Nova Scotia by 51-year-old dentist Gabriel Wortman. An investigation by an independent public inquiry, also known as the Mass Accident Commission, the Canadian National Police Force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, committed errors that cost lives.

The shootings took place in the rural community of Portapique and the communities of Wentworth, Debert and Enfield in Nova Scotia.

Errors ranged from officers accidentally shooting a fire station in their attempts to stop Wortman, to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notifying the public Twitter and Facebook that there was a mass shooting rather than a gallery, which led to an increase in alerts nationwide.

According to Vice News, police initially believed Wortman was dead or was hiding in the vicinity after several people were killed. During that time, he traveled hundreds of miles to an area an hour outside the provincial capital.

The only reason Wortman was eventually shot was a chance encounter with the police while filling the gas tank of a stolen car.

Salt Wire reports that Dave McNeil, Chief of the Truro Police Service, said in one of the commission’s testimony, “There must have been so many catastrophic failures for this guy to have been at large for 13 hours driving through Nova Scotia.”

The commission was set up in response to public criticism of the RCMP’s response by family members of the victims. It is expected to continue its investigations in the coming months and a final report will be ready by November.
