Channing Tatum shared that he was afraid of becoming a father and “wasn’t sure what to do” because he had become a single parent to a young daughter.
In an interview with Matt Perekal published by Parents on June 17, Tatum opened up about his parenting journey and his nine-year-old daughter, Everly “Effie” Tatum. The actor shares custody of his only child with his ex-wife Jenna Dewan.
Tatum shared that he and his father didn’t always grow up and didn’t want the same relationship with his daughter, who Tatum said was born antonyms. He said his solution was to “go into her world and be with her” when she used her imagination.
The Lost City star wasn’t always too confident when raising Everly. He told the outlet that his first children’s book, The One and Only Sparkella, came from his experience learning how to be a single parent.
“I wasn’t sure what to do with a strong little girl. I grew up very differently from them. So I was nervous,” he said, adding, “I think writing these books is my way of trying to prove what I’ve learned because being a kid is messy. And knowing being a parent is probably more messy than being a kid.”
The actor told the executive that he was afraid of becoming a father because “I didn’t know how to be the father I wanted.” Now he says he is no longer afraid to bond with his child and that they are “best friends”.
Last year, Tatum posted the first photo of his daughter’s face on Instagram. The photo showed the couple standing together on the beach.
“You guys are my everything! You are my world and my heart,” the actor wrote, describing his daughter gazing at the full moon in the photo. “One day you’ll read this and hope you laugh. We’re having fun.”
Insider’s Claudia Whelen previously reported that Dewan and Tatum reached an agreement in 2020 to share 50/50 custody of their daughter, according to legal documents obtained by The Blast. The agreement reportedly included rules for listing Everly on Dewan and Tatum’s social media pages.
Tatum, 42, is best known for his roles in the Magic Mike franchises, 21 Jump Street, and Foxcatcher. He rose to fame after starring in the 2005 dance film Step Up, where he met his ex-wife Dewan. They were married from 2009 to 2018.
