2022 – Chelsea prepares to increase Sterling’s offer, with Manchester City expecting the player to leave | transfer window

Manchester City expect Raheem Sterling to leave this summer and Chelsea are ready to increase their interest in the England winger once Romelu Lukaku’s loan to Inter Milan is completed.

Thomas Tuchel is keen to escalate his counterproductive attack, and Chelsea, who are on the verge of giving Lukaku permission to return to Inter, are planning to ramp up their transfer activity soon. Sterling is at the top of the target list and City are unlikely to stand in the 27-year-old’s way.

City have expanded their attacking options with Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and Julian Alvarez from River Plate, and with Sterling’s contract expiring next summer, the Premier League champions are preparing to take advantage of it. It has been suggested that they want £50m to £60m.

There is unlikely to be a lack of interest in Sterling, despite not starting many of City’s biggest matches over the past two years, and his attraction to Chelsea is evident. Last season, when Sterling scored 17 goals, they lacked the harsh edge and it would be an upgrade for many of Tuchel’s options in the final third.

Sterling’s ability to play on the front lines makes him an attractive choice for Tuchel. Chelsea know it will not be easy to replace Lukaku, who were disappointed after his £97.5m move from Inter last year, with another target man. Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski wants to join Barcelona, City relegated Haaland and Liverpool bought Darwin Nunez.

This means that Chelsea can look for alternative ways to build their attack. They are also eyeing Ousmane Dembele, as the French winger is expected to leave Barcelona on a free transfer. Tuchel took care of Dembele at Dortmund and values him highly, despite doubts over the 25-year-old’s injury record. Another option, Christopher Nkunko of RB Leipzig, may be out of reach. Chelsea are also interested in City’s Gabriel Jesus, but Arsenal are leading the way in signing the Brazilian.

According to sources, it is only a matter of time before Lukaku returns to Inter. Chelsea’s new owner, Todd Boyle, has backed Tuchel’s decision to part with the striker. Lukaku does not conform to the Tuchel regime and did not have an easy relationship with the German.

The 29-year-old is eager to return to Inter, who have been negotiating the terms of a deal with Chelsea. A £10m loan fee could suffice, and Inter would also have to cover part of Lukaku’s £325,000 wages. A direct loan is easier than a swap, although Chelsea have shown interest in Inter defenders Denzel Dumfries, Alessandro Bastoni and Martin Skriniar.

Chelsea need defensive reinforcements following the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, while Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso may be on the way as well. They hope to seal a deal with Sevilla player Jules Koundé soon and are targeting RB Leipzig’s Jusco Gvardiol, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Jimenez, Juventus’ Matisse de Ligt and Villarreal’s Pau Torres. New links have also emerged with City’s Nathan Ake, who was previously at Chelsea.

It remains to be seen if City wants to sell Aki. They are considering selling Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is wanted by Everton and West Ham. Zinchenko intervened at left-back for City, but he wants to play in the middle of the field.

Guardiola is chasing the traditional left-back position and is determined to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton. Brighton want £50m but City believe £40m could be enough. Chelsea and Newcastle are also interested in Cocorella but City are his first choice.
