2022-Euro 2022: England manager Sarina Wegman says ‘They can do better’ but starting to win is important

“It was very important” to start Euro 2022 with a win, says England manager Sarina Weigman The hosts beat Austria 1-0.

Beth Mead scored the only goal, ahead of a tournament record of 68,871 at Old Trafford.

“The first game in the tournament, it’s very important to win and get off to a good start,” Wigman told BBC Sport.

“We showed different stages – some good, some not so good. We should have scored more goals and made it easier.”

England are among the favorites for the tournament, as Wegmann won the last Euro 2017 with the Netherlands.

When asked if tension was a factor, she added: “It’s hard to say, we wanted to start well. We didn’t carry the ball well. We scored a good goal and still had a few chances. In general I’m just happy.”

“I’m not disappointed, I think we can do better. After the first goal we had a great chance, and we have to calm down a bit in the final stages.

“The atmosphere was very nice. It’s hard to have an impact because the players can’t hear you, but that’s what we want.”

Arsenal striker Meade scored the only goal after 16 minutes when a defender almost pushed fellow Austrian goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger off the crossbar. However, goal-line technology determined that the shot crossed the goal line.

“I was so sure [it crossed] But you always doubt yourself when a little time passes,” Mead said.

“It’s indescribable. What a great night to start the tournament with a win. It was so noisy we couldn’t even hear what it was like. [Wiegman] He said [afterwards in a huddle]. We were all in Sweet Caroline.”

England captain Leah Williamson also praised the strong support from the fans.

“What an occasion. The fans came out and we hit it.”

“It was so special, I had no idea what to expect. We took it well. I closed my eyes while the national anthem was playing. If I looked at my mom, I would start crying.”

“It’s noisy, and communication is getting more and more difficult. Sometimes it’s in the way, but I’ll dispense with that any day.”

“You don’t have to be at your best in the first match and you can grow. The points on board are the most important.

“We dealt with pressure and expectations and it’s over now. A good start.”
