2022 – Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman says she is now “embarrassed” by the lack of diversity

“Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy,” Kaufman said. “It hurts to look at yourself in the mirror. I feel embarrassed that I didn’t know anything better in 25 years.”

The series Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004, starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. It has been criticized for its lack of long-range colored characters.

In 2020, Schwimmer told the Guardian that he was “very aware of Lee’s privilege as a straight white man” and said that the “Friends” occurred during a period “before the awakening” when the story was not exhaustive.

“Maybe there should be all-black ‘friends’ or ‘all-Asian friends,’” said Schwimmer, who played Ross for ten seasons. “But I was aware of the lack of diversity, and for years I advocated for Ross to date women of color. One of my first girlfriends on the show was an Asian American woman, after which she started dating African American women. That was a very conscious move on my part.”

That didn’t sit well with some, who noted that the comedy All-Black Cast aired from 1993 to 1998 (a year before Friends) and focused, like Friends, on six young men and women living in New York City. .

Kaufman, who has made friends with David Crane, told the Los Angeles Times she had a better understanding of systemic racism in the United States after the killing of George Floyd and subsequent complaints about the show.

This motivated her to pledge $4 million to her university, Brandeis University in Boston, to establish a professorship in the Department of African American and African Studies.

Since announcing the foundation, Kaufman has said she has “nothing but love.”

“It was great. It surprised me somewhat because I wasn’t expecting the news to be widely publicized.” “I’ve had a barrage of emails, texts and posts that have been anything but supportive. I have a lot of ‘it’s about time’. Not in a mean way. People just admit it was long overdue.”
