Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance with rock guitarist Jeff Beck in Sheffield on Sunday night.

Depp sang and played guitar, Jimi Hendrix covers Little Wing and Marvin Gaye What Happens, as well as John Lennon’s song Isolation, which he and Beck recorded for a studio version in 2020.

The show comes amid a high-profile lawsuit he has brought against Depp against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, which is accusing Heard of defamation after she published an article in the Washington Post in which she described herself as a victim of domestic violence. Heard sued her.

The jury spent seven weeks hearing each side’s allegations of abuse and will consider the verdict after meeting again on May 31.

Depp has always been involved in rock music, including with his big group Hollywood Vampires alongside Alice Cooper and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry. In 2015 they recorded with Paul McCartney and Depp appeared in the video for McCartney’s song My Valentine and also plays guitar. Footage of this performance, which has been part of McCartney’s live group since 2013, was shown during McCartney’s US tour amid Depp’s trial, although McCartney has not commented on the case.

Upon releasing her version of Isolation in 2020, Beck said, “Johnny and I have been working on music together for a while now and recorded this track during our time in the studio last year… You’ll hear more from Johnny and I in no time.” However, there have been no more releases since Isolation.
