Legendary jockey Lester Piggott, who won the derby nine times, has died at the age of 86.

The Englishman has won 30 British Classics in his career, producing 4,493 winners.

He also had 116 wins at Royal Ascot and was an 11-time Jockey Champion between 1960 and 1982.

“Sadly we can confirm that Leicester passed away peacefully in Switzerland this morning,” said William Haggas, his son-in-law and derby-winning coach.

Bigot was admitted last week to a hospital in Switzerland, where he has been living.

His first Haydock win came in 1948 at the age of 12 and his last win at the same distance came in 1994. In 1995 he retired permanently.

Piggott first won the derby at Epsom in 1954 aboard Never Say Die, and his ninth win was in 1983 with Teenoso.
