Manchester United are in contact with Ajax at the expense of Gorian Timber, with Eric Ten Hag keen to make the defender one of his first signings.
Ten Hag is a huge fan of Timber, who made his Eredivisie debut in March 2020, and the 20-year-old defender has been an integral part of Ajax’s title-winning side in the last two seasons under him.
Timber is primarily a central defender who can also play as a linebacker. The center back is a particular weak point in Ten Hag’s side due to the asymmetric form of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof, the front players in this position. Their backups, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, are injury-prone and could leave this summer.
Timber, who has made six caps in the Netherlands, has two years on his contract so Ajax can value him at around €50m (£43m). United’s talks with the club are still in their early stages, and Ajax is said to have offered Timber new terms.
Ten Hag also supervises the central defense of Villarreal Pau Torres. The 25-year-old Spaniard has more experience than Timber, who made his debut in 2017, and has a release clause of around €60m. His term ends in the summer of 2024, but he was offered a new contract.
Speaking about his future, Torres told AS: “At the moment there is absolutely nothing. I have assurances that I am where they want me, in the club of my life, and I have this offer now, which I consider very positive.”
