A relative of his told the New York Post that the first victim of the Texas gunman, his grandmother, who was shot in the face, may never be able to speak again.

The 18-year-old gunman was living with his grandmother in Ovaldi, Texas. He was shot on May 24 before he drove to Robb Elementary School, holed up in a fourth-grade classroom and opened fire. He killed 19 children and two adults before being shot by US border guards.

Her second cousin Jason Ybarra told the newspaper that his grandmother, Celia “Sally” Martinez Gonzalez, is lucky to be alive.

“The bullet entered Sally’s jaw next to her mouth and shattered all of her teeth,” Ybara said. “If the bullet had gone an inch any other way, it would have tore her head off.”

Ybarra told the newspaper that Gonzalez is recovering well in hospital but “may not be able to speak again.”

He said she is currently only communicating in writing.

NBC News said the shooter moved in with his grandmother a few months ago after he clashed with his mother and her boyfriend.

His grandfather, Rolando Reyes, told the New York Post last week that on the morning of the shooting, his grandmother told him he needed to do more housework.

Authorities say the gunman arrived at the school with two AR-15 rifles and a pistol. In Texas, guns can be purchased at age 18.

The shooter legally acquired one of the rifles the day after his eighteenth birthday. It is not clear what weapon was fired at his grandmother.
