Robin Ostlund’s social satire Triangle of Sadness won the Palme d’Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, giving the Swedish director one of the most prestigious film awards for the second time.
Previously, Korean star Song Kang-ho won Best Actor for his performance in Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s film Broker, which is about a Korean family searching for a home for an abandoned child.
“I want to thank everyone who appreciates Korean cinema,” said Song, who starred in Bong Joon-ho Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes three years ago.
The Best Actress award went to Kaiser Amir Ebrahimi for her portrayal as a journalist in Ali Abbas Holy Spider, a true crime thriller about a serial killer targeting sex workers in the Iranian religious city of Mashhad. The film The Holy Spider, which features violence and graphics, has been banned from filming in Iran and made instead in Jordan. Ebrahimi accepted the award and said the film showed “everything that cannot be shown in Iran”.

The closing ceremony on Saturday brought to an end the Cannes Festival that was trying to fully revive the annual French extravaganza, which was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and drew modest crowds last year. This year’s festival was also held against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which sparked red carpet protests and debate about the purpose of cinema in wartime.
The Palme d’Or, one of the film’s most prestigious awards, is known to be impossible to resist – although the bookmakers are still trying their best. It depends entirely on jury deliberations that take place behind closed doors. Last year, the French horror film Titan won the award, making director Julia Diorneau the second female director ever to win the Palme d’Or.
This year’s award for Best Primary Camera Role went to Riley Keough and Gina Gammell for War Pony, a drama about the Pine Ridge Sanctuary created in collaboration with the indigenous Oglala Lakota and Sicangu Lakota.
