2022 – Ronnie Hawkins, musician and band teacher, dies at the age of 87

The story of the band began with Ronnie Hawkins. He was our teacher. We’ve learned the rules of the road.”

According to The Band’s website, Hawkins was born in Arkansas but called Canada home. He was a member of the group Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks, which became popular in the early 1960s.

“Hawkins himself was practically Toronto’s answer to Elvis Presley,” the band said on their website.

Robertston said on Facebook: “Rooney was the godfather. The one who made it all possible. He kept us training until the wee hours of the morning. We fought against it, but we got better and better. Our goal whether we knew it or not.”

“After the Hawks left Ron and started their own business, we joined Bob Dylan. Then the Hawks became the band and the rest is history as they say,” Robertson summed up. “It all starts with Ronnie Hawkins.”

Robertson said, “Not only was he a wonderful performer, a wonderful instrumentalist and bandleader, but he had a style of humor like no other. Downhill fun and totally unique. Yes, God created just one of them. He will live in our hearts forever.”

Robertson did not share the cause of death.
