2022 – Samsung still has the world’s two best-selling foldable phones, but Huawei is gaining ground

Well, that’s something you probably haven’t heard in a minute. Huawei is rapidly growing in a key market dominated by Samsung, although it still apparently is not allowed to use Android, Google Play Store or Google Mobile Services.

But the foldable part can mark a new beginning, like the Stun The P50 Pocket managed to turn its makers into a healthy 20 percent slice of the global pie for the booming category in the first three months of this year.

That’s up from just 9 percent in the last quarter of 2021, and while Samsung’s edge doesn’t appear to be under threat in the near term, Huawei can certainly build on that progress going forward. By the way, the future of the still small but fast-growing market for foldable smartphones looks bright, with an overall growth of 107 percent right now. Forecast by DSCC for the full year.

Not surprisingly, it ranks third, a surprisingly small gap between #2 and #3

This will bring the total number of foldable device shipments to over 16 million units, which is certainly not much in the grand scheme of the global wireless industry, but is expected to continue growing at a similar (if not faster) pace for the next few years.

Samsung accounted for 74 percent of the 2.22 million units sold worldwide between January and March 2022, keep in mind, but during The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was by far the most successful single model (again), the aforementioned Huawei P50 Pocket surprisingly close to beating it Z-fold 3 to get the silver medal position.

must give Samsung paused, although a file The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is already expected to be more popular than its illustrious predecessor thanks to a “launch price lower than $1799 last year”.

It’s actually not the first time we’ve heard about it Possible price cuts for the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 compared to their predecessors in 2021, but unfortunately no leaker, guide or industry analyst is bold enough to come up with numbers, leaving us hoping for the best while anticipating the “worst”. Cuts are no more than $100 or so.

More exciting things yet to come

The interesting number mentioned in today’s market report is three, indicating the number of brands that are expected to enter the folding category in the second half of 2022, contributing to the overall “strong” growth expected despite various production challenges.

Other brands like Oppo, Honor, Vivo, and Xiaomi will also at least try to increase their competition with Samsung (and Huawei), so it’s really no wonder that the best for the foldable market is yet to come.
