2022 – Sidhu Moose Wala: Punjabi singer and rapper shot dead | India

Indian police are investigating the murder of a famous Punjabi rapper who mixed hip-hop, rap and folk music, a day after he was fatally shot.

Shabdeep Singh Siddhu, known worldwide by his stage name Seidu Moss Walla, was killed Sunday night while driving his car in Mansa, a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab. Moss Walla, 28, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Punjab Police Chief VK Hawra said initial investigations indicated the killing was the result of rival gangs.

Local media reports said that a day before the attack, the Punjab government had set up security for more than 400 people including Mos Wal to crack down on VIP culture.

Moss Walla got his start as a songwriter before taking off in 2017 his singing career and propelling him to prominence in the Indian and Punjabi diaspora in countries such as the UK and Canada.

Most of his singles have English titles, although the songs were mostly sung in Punjabi. His illustrious music videos were known for his rap lyrics and often focused on macho culture. His debut album of 2018 reached the Billboard Albums chart in Canada.

Moss Walla has been a controversial figure, in part due to his singing style. In 2020, the police charged him under the Indian Arms Act for promoting gun culture in one of his songs.

His latest single, The Last Ride, was released earlier this month.

The rapper joined the Indian Congress last year and ran in the state general election to no avail.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Man said he was deeply shocked and saddened by the killing and that “none of the perpetrators have been extradited”.

Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress party leader, tweeted his condolences over the killing. “Deeply shocked and saddened by the assassination of a promising conference head and a talented artist,” he said.
