2022 – The Australian national team deals a blow to the World Cup qualifiers with the resignation of Tom Rojk | Australia

Australia were dealt a heavy blow ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier against the United Arab Emirates as midfielder Tom Rogic withdrew from Graham Arnold’s squad.

A little more than a week before the play-off match between the two Asian football teams in Doha, Rojic informed the team’s staff of his decision to retire for personal reasons.

Without one of his most creative players in attack, Arnold is suffering from a selection headache, but Australian football said on Tuesday the Australian team would not name a replacement.

“My focus now is on the players we have here in Qatar,” Arnold said. “We’ve picked a wide selection of quality players and I think we’re going to do something special for Australia over the next two weeks.”

Australia need to win the match once next Wednesday to keep their hopes of a fifth consecutive World Cup at the end of the year. The final playoff of the long qualifying campaign against Peru awaits the winner next week.

Rogic is without a club after announcing that he would end his nine-year association with Celtic following the Scottish Premier League title for the club under Anzhi Postecoglou.

Arnold’s midfield options have been boosted by the return of Aaron Mooy, who has not played a competitive match this year but has a chance to show his fitness in a friendly against Jordan on Wednesday (Thursday morning AEST).

Moy was one of the many big names missing from the Australian squad as their qualifying campaign was derailed in recent international encounters when successive defeats to Japan and Saudi Arabia dashed their hopes of automatic qualification for the tournament in Qatar.
