The Kalush Orchestra, the Ukrainian band that won the Eurovision Song Contest, has auctioned its trophy to raise money for Ukrainian troops during the war against Russia.
On Sunday, the band raised $900,000 in a Facebook auction for their Crystal Trophy. Reuters reported that the funds will be allocated to the Ukrainian armed forces to purchase several aircraft.
The group won the competition on May 15 after performing a song called “Stefania”. Ukrainian President Zelensky publicly congratulated the orchestra performing in Italy and said Ukraine would host the competition next year.
“Our courage fascinates the world, our music conquers Europe! Next year Ukraine will host the Eurovision Song Contest,” Zelensky said in a statement.
The orchestra stated that their victory was for “every Ukrainian” and that they would celebrate their victory only “after the war”, the Belfast Telegraph reported.
