2022 – The fight between Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero will be “pure and pure violence,” according to the organisers.

  • Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero vie for Showtime on Saturday.
  • Promoters expect the ferocity of boxing rather than its beauty.
  • “There is a personal competition where they have the result to be settled and it has nothing to do with boxing.”

The upcoming light boxing match between Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero will be “pure violence,” according to organizers.

On the 10 fight battle map, there is a 135-pound fight with an internal rivalry. Davis – 27 with a martial arts allure – feels disrespected by 26-year-old Romero, who appears to have insulted his opponents’ intelligence, physique and skill.

Things threatened to come to a head on Friday when Davis pushed Romero off the New York stage. When Romero got back on his feet, both fighters had to be separated lest they fight in vain before this weekend’s lucrative box office match.

The Battle of Mayweather Promotions takes place on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and will air on Showtime pay-per-view beginning at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PT.

Saturday’s showdown will be a “huge fight,” according to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerby, who told Insider he expects “this showdown will end in a knockout because you have two great players.”

Ellerby added, “What I really believe in is that Rowley will bring out the best in Tank Davis, and I think Tank will bring out the best in Rowley.”

Showtime Sports chief Stephen Espinosa said the battle would be fought with “a sharp instrument” rather than “micro-surgery”.

Espinosa told Insider, “If I was trying to showcase the art, beauty, and ballet of boxing, Davis vs. Romero wouldn’t be at the top of my list as an A-show. And that’s not because it wasn’t fun or a good match, but because it’s more like pure violence.”

“And that’s by design,” Espinosa said. “There is a personal rivalry and another where they have a reckoning to settle that has nothing to do with boxing. This often turns out to be one of the most brutal fights we have in the sport.”

Ellerby added, “You’re not going to be fighting a two-man boxing match in a stabbing contest. This fight is right here, you’re not going to see it. You’ll see the barn burner from the opening bell.”

Gervonta Davis “Exceptional” and an American star

Jerfonta Davis.

Davis is one of the few pay-per-view boxing stars, and it’s a staple at Showtime’s box office.

His all-sold-out shows in Baltimore, Atlanta and now in Brooklyn are testament to his growth as a true gateway-side attraction.

“Any celebrities who usually watch fights and come to the big events will be there,” Ellerby said of his star fighter’s ability to capture the attention and interest of NBA players, rappers, CEOs, and ordinary people.

“This is going to be a huge event,” Ellerby said, adding that Davis is a big American star, “because we know what we’re doing.”

Espinosa said Davis is “definitely building” when it comes to annual growth as pay-per-view merchandise for its premium network.

“Tank really is phenomenal for someone who is a bit shy outside the ring – his fan base and popularity just keeps growing.

“We’re on our way to being the biggest boxing target of all time at Barclays,” Espinosa said.

The TV executive said Davis made $4 to $4.5 million in ticket sales for battles in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

“He’s on his way to achieving that level of goals at Barclays as well,” he said. “There are very few fighters who can do that, who can go to several cities outside their home lands and attract that kind of fan at these ticket prices.”

Espinosa called Davis “a rhinoceros in this respect”.

All that Espinosa lacks is “that great special battle.”

This could be a “struggle for unification against someone with a big name”.

Already considered an American star by those close to him, winning a world-class consolidation match would “elevate Tank to another stratosphere.”

But first, Davis must defeat Romero in a grudge match.
