2022 – The mayor of Highland Park says she was the boy scout leader suspected of shooting him, and asks him how he felt “outrageous” and “hate”.

Mayor Nancy Rottering speaks to the media at the end of Central Street after the Monday, July 5, 2022 mass shooting in Highland Park.

  • Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rottering said she was the Cub Scout leader accused of the shooting.
  • She told NBC Today that she wonders how anyone could be “angry” and “hate”.
  • She said the suspect apparently had “some big problems” that led him to “bring evil to his hometown”.

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rottering said she knew Robert E. Cremo III, the 21-year-old suspect in Monday’s mass shooting, has been since childhood.

“I know him as someone who was a Boy Scout when I was a Boy Scout leader,” Rottering said on NBC’s Today Show in an interview published Tuesday.

“It’s one of those things where you take a step back and say, ‘What happened?'” she said. “How did someone get so angry, so loathsome, and then take it on the innocent who just had a family day?”

“He was still a little kid,” Rottering says of her childhood experience with the alleged gunman.

“Obviously if he feels compelled to bring evil into his hometown on the Fourth of July, he has some major issues,” she told Insider on Tuesday.

Rottering told TODAY that she believes her community will “never recover from this wound” and called the shooting a “very devastating blow” to everyone.

“We as a country have to have a very strong conversation with ourselves,” she said.

“I don’t know how many of these events haven’t happened yet. We’ve been talking about this for literally decades at this point,” Rotering added. “And one of those things where you wonder if that reflects our values, what does that say about us as a nation?”

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in intense shooting on Monday.

Authorities said the suspect was disguised as women during the attack. They also said that prior to the shooting, the suspect had posted violent music videos online showing mass shootings and photos of the show’s stage.

The suspect was arrested on Monday night and has since been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder.
