CASPER, Wyoming – Crowds of former President Donald Trump’s supporters eagerly await him to take to the podium at a rally Saturday afternoon as he is expected to humiliate Republican Representative Liz Cheney, the only Wyoming congressman who has vehemently attacked Trump.
The former president is on his way to Wyoming to support Harriet Hageman, the attorney who will run in the upcoming Republican primary to oust Cheney, a Trump ally turned critic after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. She was one of 10 Republican members of the House of Representatives who voted last February to impeach Trump on charges of “inciting rebellion.”
Trump has since targeted the congresswoman and vowed revenge against Republicans like Cheney, who he said betrayed him. Cheney, a staunch conservative, has stood her ground against Trump despite the onslaught of national and international backlash by members of her party.
Trump’s arrival in Wyoming, his first political appearance in the state, comes just as the primary elections are just beginning. Cheney formally filed for re-election on Thursday. No significant polls have yet been conducted for the race which will take place on August 16th.
The election is widely seen as a test of Trump’s control of the Republican Party. Recently, Trump’s notable endorsements failed in the Georgia primaries. Trump has backed two main contenders against incumbent Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Ravensberger, both of whom have rejected Trump’s bid to nullify the 2020 election results in the battleground state. Kemp and Ravensberger both won the primaries on Wednesday with a landslide victory. However, Trump-backed candidates in Ohio and Pennsylvania have won primaries in recent weeks.
