(Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited troops on the front lines in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region on Sunday, in his first official appearance outside the Kyiv region since Russia’s invasion began on Feb. 24.

“You are risking your lives for all of us and for our country,” the president’s office website quoted him as telling the soldiers, adding that he offered praise and gifts.

Zelenskyy chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote in the Telegram app that the president also visited Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine.

Yermak said that Zelensky inspected the destroyed apartment buildings and found that their replacements should be built with bomb shelters.

The chief of staff of the president added that 31% of the territory of the Kharkiv region is currently occupied by Russia and that Ukraine has regained another 5% after its previous occupation.
