  • The actor lost his voice after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014.

After his first role as Lieutenant Tom “Isman” Kazansky in the 1986 film Top Gun, Val Kilmer returned triumphant 36 years later in the sequel Top Gun: Maverick. In the 2022 movie, he is now playing the role of an admiral.

Kilmer, 62, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, according to the New York Times Magazine. After multiple treatments, including tracheostomy, he lost his voice, the outlet reported. Kilmer publicly confirmed his diagnosis in 2017 after denying reports of his illness.

Last year, the actor teamed up with London-based tech company Sonantic, using artificial intelligence technology to recreate his iconic voice for the sequel. Sonantic used old recordings of Kilmer’s voice to make it sound as if he was actually speaking in the movie Fortune.

In an August 2021 interview with People, Kilmer’s son, Jack Kilmer, said his father was excited about the project.

“They honor the legacy of Isman and eh [Kilmer] Jack said about his father.

In the same interview, the film’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, said that Tom Cruise was the “driving force” in convincing Kilmer to return for the sequel.

“He said, ‘We have to have Val, we have to get him back. He must be in the movie,'” Bruckheimer said. “And he was the driving force. We all wanted it, but Tom really thought Val had to be there if he was going to do another Top Gun.”

Bruckheimer continues: “This is [Kilmer] He’s a good actor and he’s a good person. We had a great time the first time around and wanted to get some gang back together.”

In the original 1986 film, Val Kilmer played Admiral Tom Kazansky “The Snowman.”

The Top Gun producer added that when Kilmer arrived to film with Cruise, it was a “really emotional experience” for all of us.

Kilmer officials did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
