“Britney Greiner is our teammate, friend and sister. She is a record breaker, gold medalist, wife and daughter, champion, role model, all-star, and much more,” the league said in a statement on Saturday.

At the moment, BG is a US citizen who has been unjustly detained in Russia for 100 days. That’s 144,000 minutes.”

The two-time Olympic gold medalist was arrested at Moscow Airport in February while playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the WNBA offseason.

Russian authorities said they found cannabis oil in their luggage and accused them of smuggling large quantities of the narcotic substance, a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Earlier this month, a Russian court extended the 31-year-old athlete’s pretrial detention until at least June.

The US government said Greiner was mistakenly imprisoned and the State Department was negotiating her release.

The WNBPA statement calls on professional and amateur athletes to take action, as well as the media and fans.

To our sisters, brothers, and colleagues in professional sports: Sign the petition, please shut down your media. Help us get to the White House.

“For athletes of any age, any level, any team, any sport, any country: this is our teammate. As a member of our global sports community, we must stand and stand together to demand their release. And don’t stop until BJ comes home.

To the media: Write the BG story. Use your platform and your voices.

“To everyone listening: Go to WeAreBG.org and sign the petition, call the White House and call everyone you know. If you know anyone in the Biden administration, call them.”

The statement also called for President Joe Biden to meet directly with Sheryl Greiner, the athlete’s wife.

“Cheryl must meet President Biden. Her persona, our sister, is being unjustly detained for 100 days. You heard our pleas. You heard the pleas of BJ’s wife, Cheryl. Now, more than ever, we need you to stand by us and bring your person home.”

Earlier on Saturday, Sheryl Greiner posted on her Instagram account asking President Biden to take action: “100 Days Wrongly Imprisoned @potus brings BG home!”

Cherelle Griner closed the post with a link to the petition calling for the basketball player to return quickly and safely to the United States.

On Wednesday, Sheryl Greiner gave her first interview since his wife’s arrest on ABC’s Good Morning America, in which she said she talks “off-and-off” through messages with Britney and is “absolutely” eager to talk to President Biden about her ongoing imprisonment.
